Maybe that's not the proper title, but it refers to how I was so excited to have a dinner date after a year on my schedule, and in the end, the guy and I didn't click. Perhaps 30 is too old, ha. He was an only child for a long time like me, and is introverted. And I wasn't that attracted to him. It was the nicest date I have been on, though: nice dinner, guy with manners, live jazz.
Today I went to the Celtic festival with my friend and her husband. $19 admission! but it was interesting. I bought a scone with whipped cream and strawberries.
I'm not sure my blog will be full of life lessons, and I don't write often, but it's a decent title for someone in transition figuring things out. A 20-something adventure :)

I want the ability to date!
Lately I can't go to bed before 4am.. I hate it.
Last night I went out with coworkers and was informally set up with my coworker's boyfriend's friend. I did like him. Maybe the alcohol influenced the feeling, but no, think I'd like him regardless. And apparently he liked me, too, and I just want to "waaaaaaaaaah!" like a big baby because I can't date with a schedule like this! My coworker does, but she lives downtown, closer to where young people live. This week I've been thinking I want to live on my own finally. Today I got my stuff from college down from the attic and starting going thru it. I'm going to sell textbooks when I get back from Cali.

Weeknight outings don't go well for me. There was a meet up.com event called "champagne loungin" that promised free champagne and reggae, but when we got there, it was two older single guys (because it was joint meetup with Singles group), and we were told the organizer wasn't coming. I hate when I go to an event and older guys are there.. that is not how I want to spend my precious time off. I talked to a guy my age whose name I don't remember. He's attractive and nice, but not my type (voice a little too Southern). Reminds me of a guy in my Spanish class this summer, "Roberto," who has a gf named Blair.
One guy, after I said I work evening shift, said "Let me guess, you're a nurse." Forgetting the evening shift connection, I thought that was funny. (I could never be a nurse!)
I got one drink, taking my friend's suggestion of a Blue Hawaiian.

My company proved my dad wrong
So they hired my long-time acquaintance, into my dept and a better shift. That kind of stings. I forwarded her resume to HR when she asked me to.. what was I to do, thwart her job search? She got discouraged because they hadn't contacted her. I told her they were exceptionally busy, and then I heard they hired temp workers, who I found out yday are only here for 2 weeks, she thought she would start applying for "shit jobs." But they saw her yday and offered today. This sounds bad, but I've the right to be bitter after a year deprived of a social life: my consolation is that she is making less than me and still is there til 8pm. I aim to get a 9-5 job where I can go on dinner dates if I want to. Speaking of men, what is with unattractive older guys msging me on meetup.com? I rsvped "Yes" to the champagne (free! supposedly) reggae event my night off. I was going to go to Cville to spend time with my laid-off friend, but she wants to apply to jobs, which I need to do, too, so it works out! Only two weeks til my trip.. I have to plan more. Can't believe it's been 2 weeks since I applied to that job. I will be happy if I apply to one more and follow up on current one before I go.
The title refers to my dad's theory they wouldn't hire C (acquaintance) b/c she stated 2x in interview that she did not want to work 4-midnight shift (mine). He thought this showed the employer she was picky.
Don't know when she starts training (which will be a 3 week thing). I'm not sure I want to work with her around.. maybe they'll put her on the other partition.
So yeah, that's rather a bummer, but should motivate me to get out of there faster. I thought that about the last hire but she turns out to be nice and friendly. Still..

My mom is actually going to work again
The last time my mom worked full-time was when I was 3 or 4. So 20 years later, she's finally doing it! I'm happy for her. It's good timing, too, because I thought 2 days before she told me that I wish I had the house to myself more often. I would love to have a vege day and watch movies, but what I really need is to change my job so that I can have a social life.
Saturday I went out with a long-time acquaintance (since elementary school). She is back in town living at home because she broke up with her professor boyfriend who decided to take a job in Montana, where she wasn't willing to go. We went to a popular restaurant/bar where they had a Bollywood theme night. I was sitting with my back to the projection screen. It wasn't racy Indian music videos (which I rather enjoy) that they were showing, but an old, cheesy subtitled movie. (And the dj was playing Indian songs). I had two "vodka crans" and then a girly mixed drink with pomegranate liquor. That was my limit. My coworker who is a few years older and had taken a sick day was there and tapped me on the shoulder. There was also a guy from my company who I recognized and said hi to but couldn't hear which dept he works in. My friend and I danced a bit but she motioned to leave when one guy got too close to her. We were fully tipsy, and she starting speaking in French. (Funny how intoxication makes us less inhibited speaking foreign languages).
We ended up at "Little Mexico," which is a little joint open til 3am for college students and those who quit the bar and have the munchies like we did. We split a barbocoa burrito, which she really enjoyed and wanted more of.
I was still a little hung-over when I woke up after noon the next morning. So I had a lot of fun with her, especially after having worked 3 consecutive Saturday nights, but it's bittersweet; going out like that makes me want to do it more often, and I can't. I am more motivated to make change now.

Après le déluge
I had an emotional crisis but am over it. I see things much rosier when it's over.. now if I could keep that feeling throughout.
My sis got contacts finally yesterday. I'm happy for her. Think it will help her self-image. SHe doesn't have a great one because she is overweight.
Today I bought Finnish night cream. Ellen thinks under 30's buying such stuff is a waste of money, but I look at it as prevention. I have a lot more fine lines than this time last year. I didn't wear moisturizer until last year because I don't have oily or dry skin; just used unscented body lotion.
Ha, an old acquaintance back in town wrote she "hooked up with the keyboardist." Not something you hear every day.

Sunny Sunday
Last night at work was terrible. Friday night was hell, too. And unfortunately, I've run out of time for now to job search because I need to plan my Cali trip, make necessary reservations, and buy a camera.
I did apply to a job (finally!) this week. Not quite qualified because it involved natural resources, but I'll follow up.
Yesterday I met up with a French acquaintance who said I should go blonde and apply to a French-speaking embassy.. they love blondes! Don't know about changing my looks for a job, but I will look into embassies.
I think it's ridiculous one can't simply walk in and get a simple, affordable hair wash and dry around here. In France they do that, but it's a little expensive. In China they do it, with a fabulous shoulder and scalp massage, and it's dirt cheap! I miss those times. (In terms of hair cut, though, they don't know how to cut Westerners' hair).
I received e-greetings from a Chinese friend because it is mid-Autumn festival. The day before I had bought moon cakes (filled with lotus paste) at the Asian store. Also bought a yummy Japanese cheese pastry. The Japanese know how to make good desserts.
